Review: A Different Sun by Elaine Neil Orr

A well written novel, authentic and passionate, with hints of The Poisonwood Bible but sufficiently original to compliment to Kingsolver’s tour de force. Orr takes a deep look at the lives of missionaries to Africa in the late 1800’s, with a focus on the expectation and reality of life for Emma, a newly married young American woman, eager to please God and her husband.   The tensions and complexity of missionary work in Africa are well handled, and Emma’s journey of learning about how she might live her faith in that context makes for a good story.
