McBride's Bailey's winner is brutal, challenging, powerful but not a reading experience I want to repeat. I stayed with it as the narrator grew from babe to child, appreciating the change in tone of the the entirely unique style but oh dear, somewhere in the middle her development, probably understandably, was arrested and the second had of the book was just more of the same.
So good marks for originality, for perseverance but what a shame it was so unremittingly hard to read.
